A majority of cyber crime perpetrators who roll out malicious programs are now producing loads of malware created for the purpose of extorting money from unsuspecting Internet users. Most of the current malware available are rogue programs whose aim is to frighten computer users into purchasing some so called antivirus or antispyware ‘security suites’ or applications.
Rogue antivirus, spyware and virus scan removal tools are scareware/malware programs that claim to scan your computer for malware. They display fake scan reports and alerts to scare you into buying some non-existence security application software. The fact is that a rogue application tries to mimic genuine security software and tries to scam users into thinking that their computers are seriously infected.
Symptoms
- Fake security alerts and messages begin to popup your computer screen.
- You are unable to perform most task with your computer, as these alerts take over your PC screen.
- Your Windows Security Center is hijacked.
- Your Internet browser is hijacked, changes are made to your browser setting.
- All your programs are blocked including your security software. All.exe files are blocked.
- Your Task Manager is blocked, so you cannot force the program to close.
- Fake blue screen appears, this is a fake imitat
ion of your Windows system crashing. - The program is never listed in your Add/Remove program Applet.
What not to do
If you have never been a victim of malware invasion, then it is good you are reading this.
If your computer starts to display all or some of the symptoms listed above, it is advisable not to:
- Click on the alerts or notifications
- Click on any part of the messages, including the close button
- Purchase the software
Tips on what you can do
- If you get a blue screen, you should try to reboot your system. Try not to follow any instructions given by the application.
- For Windows XP or later, use the System Restore utility to restore your computer system to a previous state, probably a few days before you encountered the malware.
- If you have an antivirus software program installed, run it immediately or download a freeware application or purchase a better Removal tool through the Internet.
- It is better to have more than one Internet browser installed. If you
r Internet Explorer or Firefox is hijacked, try Google Chrome.
To completely remove malware, all the harmful files associated with the program must be completely removed from your computer system. All the registry entries must be totally removed. Otherwise, when you reboot your computer the infection will be back in full force.
Important Consideration
It is possible to remove rogue programs manually; you can download instructions off the Internet. However, this involves editing your system registry. Care must be taken not to damage your Computer system.
A good alternative is to use a legitimate anti-malware application such as Malwarebytes’ antimalware to get rid of the threat. Some applications are more advanced than others and can resist even the most advanced malware threats.
