Rootkits
Rootkits
Rootkits are computer programs that have the ability to gain full control over a computer system. Rootkits can change settings and alter the operations of a computer system at the level of a computer administrator.
A rootkit can
- Install “back door” to a system and give attackers and hackers direct access to the system. This way the criminals can steal valuable information or alter information to their advantage.
- Be used by hackers to intercept commands, and also attack other computers connected by network.
- Hide their activities so they can not be easily discovered and removed by anti-malware programs.
- Hide other software programs
- Install and distribute other unsolicited and annoying contents and software
- Can harm or damage hijacked computers
- Become a Trojan horse and pose as a sort of useful software or application so that the user is deceived into installing it.
Rootkits can be used for positive activities such as enhancing legitimate security software to detect attacks. However, the use of rootkit as malicious software is very common and therefore may be viewed as a very serious security threat.
